My Story
In October 2018, I joined The Montana Woman Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes and assists in the education of women in Montana with scholarships, workshops and mentorships. Since I was a recent college graduate student with an English degree, I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted to volunteer my skills. I decided to apply all that I learned from digital and public rhetorics, and my search engine optimization courses towards growing their online marketing. Within my first year, I grew our Instagram/Facebook audience by 500%, and donations and sponsorships by 30%.
In 2019, my dear friend and the executive director of The MWF suggested I use the skills that I had been using to design The MWF website and social media accounts and put it towards building my own business.
In 2021, I joined their mentorship program and helped a fellow Montana woman start certain essential components of her business. I shared my knowledge as a content writer and small business owner, and helped her figure out how to maximize web copy and social media marketing strategies.
Then I had the bright idea to combine what I taught my mentee with my academic side! My work went from somewhat regular blogging to a simple approach to content writing with rhetorical theories to back me up. These rhetorical theories come from extensive research in public rhetorics and digital rhetorics- there are sources in the workbook!
In May 2021, I published my first edition of Figure Out Content Writing. After several months this year, I updated the workbook and published it to Etsy.
